Breast Health

For the prevention of breast lumps, cysts and discomfort, try the following Bowen Technique procedure on yourself, once a week before going to bed. This helps the breast area drain overnight.

Perform this technique standing up and leaning slightly forward. You will need to use both hands and use only gentle pressure.

For the Left Breast:

Move 1 - Holding the left hand flat and at right-angles to the body, palm facing the floor, the thumb joint and thumb should be used to push the breast tissue gently downwards.

The right hand - flat and at right angles to the body, palm facing the floor and directly above the left hand should be used to make the following move: place the edge of the index finger on the pectoral muscles above the breast. Move the right hand outwards towards the armpit, just sliding the skin along. Gently pull the right hand back, keeping it above the left hand and towards the breast bone.

Move 2 - Again keeping both hands flat, palms parallel to the floor, use the left hand to gently push the breast tissue upwards. Use the edge of the right index finger to gently slide the skin towards the breast bone and then across towards the armpit. It is important that this move is done with very little pressure as you will be working directly over delicate lymph nodes and nerve bundles here!

For the Right Breast

Move 1 - Holding the right hand flat and at right-angles to the body, palm facing the floor, the thumb joint and thumb should be used to push the breast tissue gently downwards.

The left hand - flat and at right angles to the body, palm facing the floor and directly above the right hand should be used to make the following move: place the edge of the index finger on the pectoral muscles above the breast. Move the left hand outwards towards the armpit, just sliding the skin along. Gently pull the left hand back, keeping it above the right hand and towards the breast bone.

Move 2 - Again keeping both hands flat, palms parallel to the floor, use the right hand to gently push the breast tissue upwards. Use the edge of the left index finger to gently slide the skin towards the breast bone and then across towards the armpit. It is important that this move is done with very little pressure as you will be working directly over delicate lymph nodes and nerve bundles here!

Other ways to protect yourself

  • Get yourself measured regularly to check you are wearing the correct size of bra. Too tight and you could be preventing essential lymph drainage; too loose and you may not be getting the support you need.
  • Avoid metal under-wired bras whenever possible. Flattering as they may be, they press on nerve bundles, impede lymph drainage and the metal wires are reputed to collect electro-magnetic energy emitted from everyday machinery such as microwaves and computers.
  • Self-examination at least once a month, preferably after your period when the breast tissue is less congested.
  • Avoid the use of antiperspirants which block the pores of the armpit and can prevent lymph drainage, causing a backing-up of fluid and toxins in the breast area. Remember that sweating is one of our body's ways of eliminating toxins - where else will they go?
  • Use a deodorant stone made from natural crystal to stay smelling fresh. They are deodorant because they prevent odour-causing bacteria from forming on the skin. These crystals are thought to be much safer because they contain no aluminium chlorohydrate, the pore-blocking ingredient found in most anti-perspirants, thought to be a risk factor in breast cancer. Worth considering?

Click on the left box below to order a natural deodorant stone for yourself. These stones are clean to use and can last for years, so they can work out cheaper than those nasty anti-perspirant deodorants!
