Spring Detox

Spring has sprung! Time for a detox?

Total Balance Aberdeen Spring Detox

Spring is the time to slough off all the sluggishness of winter and as the seasons change, it's a great time to detox your body and mind!

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring is the time of the Liver - the body's major organ of detoxification and here are a few ways you can help it.

Skin Brushing - this can help lymphatic drainage and remove dead skin cells. Remember to always work from the extremities towards the heart and do this each day, before showering.

Diet - now is a great time to rid our bodies of that winter dampness by eating lighter meals and ones which contain cleansing foods such as asparagus, pulses, grains such as barley, quinoa, rice and corn. Good blood cleansers are garlic, lots of vegetables and lots of fresh water. It is time to avoid concentrated, sweet or salty flavours as these can cause fluid retention. Honey can help clear mucus in the body so it is preferable to sugar if you need something sweet.
Try to avoid tea, coffee and alcohol for at least a while and use alternatives like herbal teas and dandelion coffee.

Cleansing drinks include:

  • Dried elderflowers made into tea, to help clear mucus
  • Hot water with lemon and ginger can gently stimulate the digestive system and help alkalise the body
  • Barley Grass can be used in smoothies to help alkalise the body and prevent waste products building up
  • Birch Juice from Weleda makes an excellent kidney and joint cleanser

Sleep - start getting up earlier. It is getting lighter now so shouldn't feel so difficult. Get to bed earlier if you feel you need more sleep.

Get your body moving - perhaps now would be a good time to get out and about more. Maybe take on a new activity such as Yoga or just make time each day to go for a walk. This will all help the body to expel toxins.

Cleansing baths - Using Epsom Salts in the bath can help your detox, as can cleansing essential oils such as fennel, rosemary and lemon (just remember to dilute your oils first).

If you can't find time for a bath then try a foot soak. Just 20 minutes with your feet in a bowl of warm water containing Epsom Salts can make such a difference.

More specific work to cleanse your system could include:

Liver Cleansing

The liver does so much work in our bodies, including removing the toxins from our blood and releasing them into the digestive tract. If the liver is overloaded, toxins can build up in the blood causing

  • headaches & migraines
  • skin problems
  • inflammation of the joints and tissues
  • gynaecological problems such as painful or heavy periods, PMS or fibroids

To help take the load off your liver include in your diet plenty of fresh vegetables; avoid dairy products, wheat and sugar; use detoxing products such as barley grass, milk thistle, dandelion and artichoke. Vogel make a good Milk Thistle complex which contains these herbs.

Colon Cleansing

To prevent toxic waste products building up on the walls of the colon, elimination should take place at least once a day. These toxic wastes can be reabsorbed into the blood stream and give the liver more work to do.
To help this process you could try linseeds, soaked in water overnight. Add a teaspoonful to your porridge. Other products include psyllium husks, which act like little brushes to cleanse your bowel. They are not the most pleasant to take but Nutri make a good product called Psyllium and Apple Pectin which comes in capsules, making them easier to get down. You must remember to drink lots of water with both these products.

Complementary Therapies such as Anmo Fu Deep Organ Massage can also help get a sluggish system moving. Or, you may wish to try the Bowen Technique, or Reflexology.

Total Balance clients can benefit from a 10% discount on natural health products and supplements so please be sure to ask for your discount code when you attend your next Complementary Therapies appointment.
